In 2013, two friends- both special education teachers- and I started the Achieving Better Life Experiences (ABLE) day habilitation program. Our mission was to reunite a small group of special needs adults with their friends and classmates, most of whom they'd spent the majority of their lives working and learning alongside. The program still exists today, and remains a very proud achievement for everyone involved. Although I was there for only two years, it was two of the most rewarding years of my life.
Following another two-year stint where I taught special education and worked with adults on an individual basis, in the summer of 2017, I went off on my own and began the ABLE program for special needs adults. I'm fortunate for the opportunity to return to this field, and I embrace all of the challenges and experiences to come. There is no population more deserving of my time and dedication.
Ultimately, our goal is to make a better life for every special needs adult that receives our services. Present and future staff will always be held to this standard of purpose. If this is your goal -for yourself or a loved one- then ABLE can help you achieve it.
